Huawei Technologies Co. is gearing up to launch new products just hours after Apple Inc. (AAPL) unveils its iPhone 16, setting the stage for a high-stakes clash between the two tech giants. Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s consumer group, teased a “epoch-making product” on Weibo, hinting at a significant reveal on September 10, following Apple’s September 9 event.
According to sources familiar with Huawei’s plans, the company is set to introduce the world’s first commercial-ready smartphone with a double-fold design. Additionally, Huawei is expected to launch an Aito electric vehicle, although the final lineup may still be subject to change.
Apple is preparing to showcase its latest family of iPhone handsets and accessories, aiming to entice consumers to upgrade their devices. In China, Huawei recently edged Apple out of the top five device makers during the June quarter, reclaiming a share of the premium market with its Mate 60 series, which features a breakthrough chip. The timing of Huawei’s event suggests the company is ready to challenge Apple head-on once again.
Yu has been seen with a new device in hand, reportedly called the “trifold,” which could offer the advantage of fitting a larger, tablet-like screen within the dimensions of a regular smartphone. Huawei, along with other Chinese manufacturers like Honor Device Co. and Xiaomi Corp., has been at the forefront of developing ultra-thin foldable phones and continues to push the boundaries of smartphone design.
